As the adage goes, a mother’s love is unconditional and surpasses all kinds of love in this world. In the Philippine culture, the mother serves as the light of the home. It is common for Filipino mothers to take care of the children and keep the household while the father works to earn a living. Over the years and because of poverty, the responsibility of earning a living has become the role of both the father and mother.

Melinda Sobrenilla of Olongapo City is a mother to nine children and wife to an ailing husband. As the sole bread winner, she needs to work hard to feed her family and support her husband’s medication.  Melinda is a wife, a mother and woman striving to fulfil all the roles rested upon her shoulders.  That was the situation Melinda was in when she was introduced to the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program back in 2009.

It is comprised of three major programs: the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino, Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS), and the Sustainable Livelihood. These three programs complement each other, paving the way to a better life for the beneficiaries.

Rido is characterized by recurring retaliatory acts of violence carried out to avenge a perceived affront or injustice. This has been considered a major factor contributing to the impediment of progress in Mindanao.
